CHURCH ZONING
1999 City Council hearings on bills that would require churches to obtain major conditional use
permits in permitted use areas where currently a site plan is required. While the general purpose of the proposed
Bill 72 is to streamline the permitting process, the provisions applicable to churches do the
exact opposite. We have both public policy and legal concerns about this aspect of the bill. (READ HFF TESTIMONY)
BOY SCOUTS IN JEOPARDY
You've likely heard by now. It was all over the news back in August. The New Jersey Supreme Court ordered the Boy Scouts in New Jersey to admit avowed homosexuals as scouts and scout leaders.
How did this happen? Since when aren't the Boy Scouts a private organization? Don't they have a right to set standards relating to their own organization? What happens now? What, if anything, does this mean for Hawaii? And what, if anything, can we do about it here? These are some of the questions Hawaii Family Forum has fielded since the New Jersey decision.
