Hawaii Family Forum Joins National Pro-Life Leaders in Urging Action on Dangerous Abortion Pill

On April 29, 2025, Hawaii Family Forum joined over 50 national and state pro-life leaders in signing a powerful letter to former President Donald J. Trump, calling for urgent action to restore common-sense protections surrounding the abortion drug mifepristone. The letter expresses deep concern over the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless deregulation of this dangerous drug and the growing trend of illegal distribution across state lines.

This united front of pro-life voices—including physicians, public policy leaders, and family organizations—highlights alarming new research showing that serious adverse events from mifepristone are 22 times higher than previously reported by the FDA. According to the data, nearly 11% of women suffer sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or other life-threatening complications after taking the pill. Tragically, women are often left without medical supervision, denied ultrasounds to detect ectopic pregnancies, and unaware of their Rh-negative status—putting future pregnancies at risk.

The letter also raises the alarm about abortion pill distribution through the mail, often bypassing state pro-life laws. So-called “shield laws” in states like New York, California, and Hawaii protect abortionists who mail pills to women in states where abortion is restricted. These shield laws defy the spirit of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision and challenge the rights of pro-life states to protect their most vulnerable citizens.

One heartbreaking example cited in the letter involves a young woman in Louisiana who was coerced into an abortion by her mother after receiving mifepristone from a New York abortionist. The girl, who had planned a gender reveal party, ended up in the hospital after suffering severe complications. The same abortionist is under legal action in Texas for another case of harm.

Eva Andrade, President and CEO of Hawaii Family Forum, emphasized the urgency of the issue:

“Here in Hawaii, we are called to protect the most vulnerable with compassion and courage. Mifepristone not only ends the life of a precious child, but it also puts mothers at serious risk—all too often without their knowledge. As people of faith, we must stand for truth and speak out against any policy that devalues life. This isn’t just about laws; it’s about love—for both the mother and her unborn keiki.”

As a signer of this important letter, Hawaii Family Forum remains steadfast in our mission to protect life and stand for truth. We continue to advocate for policies that uphold the dignity of every human life, defend the rights of states, and ensure that women are not harmed by abortion-on-demand practices masquerading as “healthcare.”

We urge our Hawaii ’ohana to stay informed, get involved, and raise their voices to protect keiki and women in our state and beyond.
