The Hawaii State legislature passed a bill requiring pro-life crisis pregnancy centers to disseminate pro-abortion messages.

CURRENT STATUS

The bill (SB501) was sent to Governor Ige on 05/05/17 for signature.  It is pending his action to sign, veto, or let pass without his signature.  Read final version here.

The “notice of reproductive health services” bill would require all centers recognized as “limited service pregnancy centers” to post a sign that reads

“Hawaii has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services, including, but not limited to, all FDA-approved methods of contraception and pregnancy-related services for eligible women. To apply online for medical insurance coverage, that will cover the full range of family planning and prenatal care services, go to mybenefits.hawaii.gov. Only ultrasounds performed by qualified healthcare professionals and read by licensed clinicians should be considered medically accurate.”

Alliance Defending Freedom litigation counsel Elissa Graves blasted a similar California bill (AB775) as an “unconstitutional trampling of pro-life advocacy,” noting that “[t]hese centers fundamentally exist to provide tangible help and real alternatives to abortion to pregnant women in need” and condemning the California government for “attempting to fund and promote Big Abortion by running roughshod over the freedom of speech and conscience guaranteed to Californians and all Americans.”

ADF further noted that they have successfully helped defeat similar laws across the country. Live Action News previously covered AB 775 in April, noting that state pro-lifers have dubbed it the “Bully Bill” and that it has come even as California has waived and reduced a number of medical standards for abortion clinics.

Hawaii should NOT go down that same road.  Stop the bullying!
